Right-of-way Vegetation Management Equipment

Right of way management is probably the most popular application of our extreme service and maintenance service brush cutters. They can be used for complete vegetation clearance of a right-of-way, or maintenance of an existing right-of-way.

"SLASHBUSTER"® mulching disks rotate relatively slow (300 to 600rpm), and are intrinsically much safer than conventional high-speed blades that turn thousands of times per minute and eject material wildly. This increased safety reduces the need for flaggers and helps keep the traffic flowing.

Another factor to consider is that high RPM designs cut vegetation cleanly like a saw, effectively pruning the plants and causing vigorous regrowth in some species. In contrast, the "SLASHBUSTER"® mulching disk has a lower rotational speed, which cracks stumps and thus kills vegetation much more effectively.

The pictures below are from a contract requiring the clearing of a right-of-way and access road through a forested area. Instead of hauling away or burning the vegetation, it was mulched and left on site. The third boom's material handler scraped out an access road, eliminating the need for more machinery. Ultimately, one "SLASHBUSTER"® brush cutter accomplished the work of several machines, enabling the contractor to underbid the competition.

Why an Excavator-mounted Brush cutter?

• Negotiate uneven terrain: tracked carriers can crawl over amazing obstacles and up slopes of more than fifty percent grade.
• Light on the land: tracked carriers usually have ground pressures of less than 5psi, allowing work in sensitive areas.
• Long reach: This increases productivity by reducing carrier movement, which in turn reduces soil disturbance.
• Common machines mean readily-available parts: A must to ensure that contracts will remain profitable.

Drainage Management

Below are different views of a "SLASHBUSTER"® HD 422 mounted on a fifty-foot long reach excavator. During times of heavy rain the water level in this drainage is far above where the excavator is positioned, and the previously dense vegetation slowed the water flow causing flooding upstream. To remedy this, the operator simply shreds trees and vegetation as they stand, then rakes the resultant debris high above water level to prevent it from entering the channel. Soil and seed bed disturbance is minimized by walking the equipment over wooden pads as seen in the second image, and the root systems of mulched trees remain in place to stabilize the drainage bank.

This before and after picture shows a neglected residential drainage system cleared and dredged using one man and one machine, the "SLASHBUSTER"® XL 480S. This model features a hydraulically operated rotating shroud that allows maximum control of mulched debris.

Here city engineers needed a new drainage through a previously unutilized right-of-way. The XL480S (mounted on a small twelve ton excavator) cleared the vegetation and dug out this new drainage channel to spec in just a few hours.

Power Line Vegetation Management

Mounted on a 200 class excavator, the HD 480B brush cutter with patented third boom allows contractors to cut a massive twenty one meter swath. This amount of reach skyrockets productivity by moving the brush cutter to the vegetation instead of the whole machine. With no wasted back-and-forth carrier movement the contractor is able to finish jobs faster and underbid the competition while lowering soil disturbances

Mechanical treatments of the past caused vigorous regrowth because their high speed blades made clean cuts that effectively pruned vegetation. This led to the need for frequent retreatment and increased cost. "SLASHBUSTER"® low-RPM mulching disks crack stumps, which has been shown to reduce the frequency of retreatment by either killing the plant or decreasing plant vigor.

Brush cutter options

Optional 90-degree tilt mount moves the head 45 degrees either side of center, increasing dexterity and maneuverability on uneven terrain.

Our patented vegetation control package (V.C.P.) is a unique solution to a persistent problem: resprout. Now it is possible to remotely spot spray those problem species from inside the cabin, which reduces labour, worker exposure and the amount of herbicide applied when compared to conventional methods.

Hydraulic trim saw for clean cuts, limbing has never been easier! Operation controlled from inside the cab. Swings back into receptacle when not in use.

Brush cutter teeth could not be simpler.

The "S-7" tooth represents our seventh generation in teeth design and alloy refinement. They are proven to be efficient, safe, durable and inexpensive.

• Costs typically total less than ONE DOLLAR per hour of operation, compared to the six to eleven dollars per hour other brush cutters cost to operate.

The sharper the teeth, the faster you can mulch, and that is why we designed our "S-7" teeth to be regularly sharpened. Compared to unsharpened carbide teeth, this gives you a constant knife-sharp edge instead of waiting for efficiency to drop enough to justify the cost of replacement. Sharp teeth also decrease wear to the entire excavator/attachment system, because they slice through wood rather than hitting it with a blunt force that sends shock waves through the system.In short; Sharp teeth are the successful contractor's secret to higher productivity, longer teeth life, lower repair costs, and a better looking final product.
How often will your teeth need sharpening? That depends on the material being mulched - we recommend sharpening every day as part of a regular maintenance schedule.

Vegetation Management for Railroads

As an alternative to conventional herbicides, "SLASHBUSTER"® brush cutters can be strapped onto rail cars for safe railroad vegetation management. Models with a third boom can reach about ten meters from the railroad center line, making vegetation management effective in even the most sensitive areas

Using its integrated double heel rack to scrape away obstructing soil, the stump grinder easily erases the stump below soil level. The double heel rack can also dig out the remaining root system, if desired.
